10 years on, will PAP slaughter sacred cows?

Published in Politics Written by Andrew Loh

The Prime Minister (PM), at the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) convention in November, pledged a “new PAP for a new era”. This follows former Foreign Minister George Yeo’s conclusion during the May General Election that “the PAP must be transformed.”

There is always something we can do

Dear everyone,

Publichouse.sg has been online just a little over 3 months. It is a little infant which all of us here are handling with much care. ;)

We would first and foremost like to express our thanks to you for your support. It has been a good 3 months for us. In that short period, we have achieved a certain level of recognition - not just of the name of our website but more importantly of the kind of work that we do. It heartens us here at publichouse.sg that you have helped us spread the word.

SUP pledges to promote & protect rights in S'pore

If you were looking for any reports in our local newspapers about the commemoration of International Human Rights Day, which fell on the 10 of December, Saturday, you would have found nary a whimper of it.

Celebrated around the world, the day marks the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations in 1948 in Paris.

The Singapore government has always shied away from expressing any overt support for the declaration.

Donate your grandparents' wisdom

Donate your grandparents' wisdom

Wisdom has traditionally been passed through conversations and stories from one generation to the next. In times of war, conflict, or merely self-doubt, elders were sought out for their sagacity and advice.  However, with the progression of technology, young people have begun to rely on the Internet for answers; youth still respect and love their grandparents, but they sometimes forget that they have an entire life’s worth of experience and knowledge.

Billionaire brothers' war against Obama

Published in What Others Say Written by Administrator

The billionaire brothers who are waging a war against Obama.

On May 17th, a black-tie audience at the Metropolitan Opera House applauded as a tall, jovial-looking billionaire took the stage. It was the seventieth annual spring gala of American Ballet Theatre, and David H.

Koch was being celebrated for his generosity as a member of the board of trustees; he had recently donated $2.5 million toward the company’s upcoming season, and had given many millions before that. Koch received an award while flanked by two of the gala’s co-chairs, Blaine Trump, in a peach-colored gown, and Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, in emerald green.

Kennedy’s mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, had been a patron of the ballet and, coincidentally, the previous owner of a Fifth Avenue apartment that Koch had bought, in 1995, and then sold, eleven years later, for thirty-two million dollars, having found it too small

Controversial date-rape ad pulled, accused of blaming rape victims

Pennsylvania's Liquor Control Board pulled a controversial online ad warning against binge drinking on Wednesday night after detractors claimed it blamed rape on victims. The ad depicts a woman's bare legs stretched out on a tile floor, her underwear around her ankles. In one version, the text reads: "Date Rape. See what could happen when your friends drink too much." The ad includes a link to an anti-binge drinking site created by the Board, controltonight.com.

Way forward for #Occupy movement

Way forward for #Occupy movement

Robin Low reports from Boston, United States.

As you may know, the #Occupy movement is gaining popularity and spreading across the world. It is now an international protest movement which is primarily directed against economic and social inequality. The movement consists of decentralized, leaderless groups with various agendas.

It all started with increased awareness of the income inequality between the top 1% and the rest of the population. Fueled by high unemployment and high costs of living, the movement will probably persist for several years as the global economy weakens further.
