Looking after death

Looking after death

He then proceeds to enshroud the body with over three layers of white cloth. It would be the last piece of clothing found on the deceased. The body is then placed in the living room as family would have their final look at the departed.

This is just one of the many rituals funeral director Syed Osman Alsagoff needs to do in an Islamic funeral service.

Another house of cards collapses

Another house of cards collapses

“Boss he said to me now no have job. He said I go outside find job,” Shafiz told Transient Workers Count Too (TWC2). There was however, one condition: Shahbas had to pay the boss $450 a month. “Boss said he must pay levy.”

Understanding the deal, Shahbas went out to find work for himself, and over the next 12 – 15 months, he was generally successful, though there was a lot of moving around — a month here, a month there, as a cleaner, construction worker, or restaurant helper. On average, he took in $1,400 or $1,500 a month (with lots of overtime), from which he had to pay for his own accommodation (costing him about $180 – $200 a month) and the $450 demanded by F&I.

Singapore's counter-terror success

Published in What Others Say Written by Administrator

The Singaporean government understood that developing programs to counter terrorist recruitment efforts is a crucial part of any counterterrorism strategy. Otherwise law enforcement and intelligence operatives can be drawn into a never ending "cat and mouse" game if terrorists are allowed to continue hijacking local grievances for support and recruits. While in some countries investing money and effort on rehabilitation programs is seen as being soft, the Singaporeans see it as an important weapon. They understand that it goes hand-in-hand with intelligence and law enforcement work, and is an important (if forgotten) tool.

The impact of the program on the community has been positive. The Muslim community feels it is part of the effort to protect Singapore from outside terrorists and corrupters. The threat from JI has diminished. Together with colleagues, as part of a study sponsored by the Qatar International Academy for Security Studies, we looked at Countering Violent Extremism programs around the world and found Singapore's to be very effective.

Sharing a secret shame

Sharing a secret shame

I was determined to speak again the unspeakable. I had no idea why I decided to change 25 years of my silence with her about the topic, but I finally just blurted it out. "It hit me -- well, I never have told you, but I was abused sexually as a child -- and later was raped as an adult." I took a deep breath. I couldn't really look at her yet. I had to get it all out before I could risk seeing her reaction.

Duct-taping your child is not "playing differently", it's child abuse

Duct-taping your child is not "playing differently", it's child abuse

A disturbing image of a child with her mouth, hands and feet duct taped has been circulating the Internet today. Andre Dmcg Curry apparently posted the photo of his daughter with the message “This is wut happens wen my baby hits me back. ; )" included in the Facebook posting. As you can imagine, the Internet is outraged.

When the Internet is outraged about stupid parenting, I turn to Bad Breeders for an in-your-face, no-holds-barred look at the issue. Deena didn't disappoint and had this gem up today.

She shares:

duct tapeAs of right now all Chicago Police will say is there is an investigation underway.

Curry’s friend Je’Vanna Cobbins said she believes Curry was just “playing around and "I wouldn’t call it child abuse.” Well Je’Vanna… I would and it is! She also said that “the image went a bit too far,” but that Curry was “being playful with his child” and “people play with their children differently.” Playful? Really? What is playful about binding and gagging your young child? Anyone, anyone, Bueller?

So what do you think? Is this playful or just straight up child abuse?

Note: We chose not to run the photo, but you can see it at the Bad Breeders' post.

Billionaire brothers' war against Obama

Published in What Others Say Written by Administrator

The billionaire brothers who are waging a war against Obama.

On May 17th, a black-tie audience at the Metropolitan Opera House applauded as a tall, jovial-looking billionaire took the stage. It was the seventieth annual spring gala of American Ballet Theatre, and David H.

Koch was being celebrated for his generosity as a member of the board of trustees; he had recently donated $2.5 million toward the company’s upcoming season, and had given many millions before that. Koch received an award while flanked by two of the gala’s co-chairs, Blaine Trump, in a peach-colored gown, and Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, in emerald green.

Kennedy’s mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, had been a patron of the ballet and, coincidentally, the previous owner of a Fifth Avenue apartment that Koch had bought, in 1995, and then sold, eleven years later, for thirty-two million dollars, having found it too small

Controversial date-rape ad pulled, accused of blaming rape victims

Pennsylvania's Liquor Control Board pulled a controversial online ad warning against binge drinking on Wednesday night after detractors claimed it blamed rape on victims. The ad depicts a woman's bare legs stretched out on a tile floor, her underwear around her ankles. In one version, the text reads: "Date Rape. See what could happen when your friends drink too much." The ad includes a link to an anti-binge drinking site created by the Board, controltonight.com.
