The tribulations of a sexologist - Pt 2
Part 2 of 2
This article is a continuation about some of the tribulations I face as Singapore’s only certified sexologist with a doctorate in human sexuality. You can read part 1 here.
By way of introduction, my work involves working with individuals or couples with sexual concerns, as well as promoting positive messages about sex and sexuality in the numerous talks and workshops I conduct. Essentially, I run a one-person coaching practice with limited outreach, and I do not possess a big marketing budget; so, when starting my practice I decided to make a concerted effort to contribute articles to various media outlets, where and when I am able to. Published articles give me publicity, enhance my credibility, and, more importantly, spread the much-needed messages about sex and sexuality I want to convey.
Hot and bothered about sex and making babies
Answer the question below: Is a sexologist...
a) Supposed to be sexy?
b) Supposed to talk about sex only in the context of marriage?
c) Supposed to make sure a married couple has lots of sex?
d) Supposed to make sure a married couple who has lots of sex makes babies?
e) All of the above?
Let’s work through the possibilities.
Nudity is not porn
Recently, I attended a two-day Internet Marketing course. Each attendee paid approximately S$2,000. Imagine my shock, then, when I arrived at the workshop venue to find that there were 94 persons attending (somebody counted). There were a total of five technical facilitators for 94 people, and since many course participants were non-techies, many were left completely in the lurch. As for myself, over the two days I learned what I could have in two hours.
The tribulations of a sexologist
When I started my practice, Eros Coaching, I was told unreservedly by many well-meaning people, often complete strangers, not to do so. Will I have enough business? Are Singaporeans going to come forward? “We are too shy!”, they exclaimed. “Why didn’t you stay in the United States and practice there? Surely, you don’t want to waste your time with this lot.”
